HOLOTYPE: K.W. Allison s.n. 18 Dec. 1934 (CHR 17696!).
Etymology:
The species epithet toa is a Maori word for being brave or victorious; courage, bravery, warrior or brave man. It referred to the "more upright habit of the subspecies".
