Semi-erect, intermittently tufted rhizomatous herb with somewhat congested erect shoot tips and deeply buried rhizomes with short, glabrous internodes 1-2 mm long. Leaves distinctly petiolate, erect, thin, but coriaceous, dark green above, purple and venose below, glabrous except for sparse, strigose deciduous adpressed pubescence on the upper surface of the young leaves and a few multicellular eglandular hairs on the blade near its base and petiole margin; blade suborbicular to broadly ovate (1.0-) 2.2- 3 cm long, (0.8-) 1.8-2.2 cm wide, apex obtuse, base round to subcordate with 4-7 pairs of obtuse, somewhat angular, deep crenations each with a conspicuous reddish-purple hydathode; petiole 0.5-2.0 cm long, 0.3-0.6 cm wide, strongly flattened and flared along the margin at the point of insertion. Inflorescence stout, 11-16 cm long, bearing a pair of cauline leaves; peduncle beset with scattered tapering, delicate, eglandular hairs, internodes 2-4, with 3 but occasionally up to 4 erect to spreading, ovate to ovate-oblong bracts decreasing in size apically, these glabrous above and below except for a few marginal hairs near the base. Flowers 3-9, the lowest pair of bracts invariably sterile; pedicels slender, lax, (1.5-) 2-2.5 cm long in flower, 2.5-3.0 cm long in fruit with scattered eglandular pubescence; calyx oblong to narrowly ovate-oblong, the base obtuse, the lobes all cleft entirely to the base, 5-6 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, obtuse, somewhat spreading in the mature flowers. Corolla white, the throat yellow, with scattered eglandular hairs on the outside of the tube and on the upper surface of the anterior lobes and 3 rows of dense white hairs radiating along the throat and extending somewhat onto the anterior corolla lobes; lobes of the corolla broadly ovate, non-angular, emarginate, spreading widely, 0.9-1.1 cm long and wide; longitudinal and transverse corolla axes hardly differing. Capsule glabrous, not seen at maturity.[Reproduced from Arroyo (1984, New Zealand J. Bot. 22: 447–463, as Ourisia goulandiana Arroyo) with permission from The Royal Society of New Zealand.]
