- a woody, deciduous climber with stems up to 30 m long, and stems and leaves densely hairy when young but becoming glabrous.
- its leaves are divided and with 3-6 opposite pairs of leaves.
- its inflorescence is a raceme with numerous mauve to deep lilac flowers 15-28 mm long.
- its pod is hairy, 6-15 cm long and contains a few smooth, brown seeds.
