Recognition
- a tall palm with a thick, stocky trunk up to 6 m tall and 60 cm wide and covered with leaf-scars.
- its leaves are once-pinnate, 4–6 m long, with 80-100 leaflets on each side of the main midrib, dark green and arching outwards from the crown.
- its inflorescence is an erect, branched panicle, with numerous, small, yellow, leathery flowers.
- its fruit is a berry up to 5 cm long, orange-yellow, and contains a single large seed.
